Letter from Rev. Samuel Maduma

Mission Trip , Maasai (Tanzania)

by Lay Canon Cris Fouse

Dear Praying Friends,

Thank you so very much for your prayers. I have returned, healthy and safe and very grateful for a wonderful mission trip to Tanzania. I do apologize for the delay in writing. Since returning home I have had two sets of house guests, held a Retreat here at the house for RCIA, had a big party for the house guests, and started a new job. Not to mention the jet lag and the normal catching up.

It was very good to see that the work of CFM which I began in 2006 in Kiteto Diocese, has taken root and is bearing much fruit, thanks to a very dedicated young priest, the Rev. Samuel Maduma. The new Bishop, the Rt Rev. Isaiah Chambalaa, is very eager to continue and expand the work. Bishop Maternus Kapinga of Ruvuma Diocese came to spend the week with us, as did priests from Shinyanga and Kagera Dioceses. These dioceses are also using CFM.

First was an all-day seminar for the Pastors' wives, widows, and Mother Union leaders, all of whom have major roles in the teaching ministries of the Church (photos below). The following days, I was able to visit several parishes in the Diocese of Kiteto where small groups such as Mothers Union, youth groups, choirs, etc., are using CFM for their regular weekly study group meetings. The evangelists are using CFM in their work as well, and people are being converted to Christ through these materials.

New congregations are being planted for the newly-evangelized. This is true especially among the Maasai, who are still largely pagans. There are four new congregations in the nearby Maasai area, and the books have been translated into the Maasai language. There is now a priest assigned to the Maasai people. From the Maasai, the Ndorobo people, another nomadic tribe, heard about Jesus and sent two men walking 90 km to request that Rev. Samuel come to them. He has now established a new church for them, and the faith is growing there. We visited both the Maasai and the Ndorobo and their new churches, and heard their enthusiastic responses.

Four dioceses in Tanzania are now using CFM in their various groups. Several more dioceses have been requesting the ministry for their people.

Please pray for this ministry. Please pray that God will lead us, step by step, to increase the work in Tanzania. And please pray for funding for the materials and for the seminars for the leaders.
